A Blog By Any Other Name

Page Six just reporded this ridiculousness:

ANNA Wintour is as picky with words as she is with her wardrobe. According to one Vogue-er, “They are expanding the Vogue Web site and getting more involved with the Internet. But Anna hates the word ‘blog’ so much, she refuses to call anything on her site a blog and has charged her staff with coming up with a new word that isn’t as garish-sounding. She wants it ASAP – in time for launch.” However, a source close to Wintour said, “Anna just doesn’t want people to refer to stories as blogs, because they’re not. It’s an improper use of the word.”

Huh – so Vogue is gonna have some stuff on a website that they want readers to read, and it is updated frequently, yet it is not a blog? I thought this sounded like a job for Wikipedia. I asked my good friend, Wiki, what in fact, is considered a blog, or what is the wikinition. Wiki said:

A blog is a user-generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of most early blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual although some focus on photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media.

So, Ms. Wintour, what exactly is it you’ll be doing? Besides perfecting your bangs and your hideous pomposity?
